What a strong LinkedIn profile needs

LinkedIn is the professional site civilian recruiters use to find candidates. A strong profile has these parts:

Headline

The line under your name. It shows in every search result, so recruiters decide in seconds whether to click.

Your kit writes this for you, ready to paste.

About section

Your story in civilian language. It tells a recruiter who you are and what job you want next.

Your kit writes this for you, ready to paste.

Experience in civilian terms

Recruiters search for civilian job titles and skills, not military codes or acronyms.

Skills and keywords

Recruiters and screening software search by these words. Missing them can keep you out of results.

I served on active duty in the U.S. Air Force from 2001 to 2009 as a 2W0 Munitions Systems specialist and a C-130 Loadmaster. LinkedIn and the professional side of social media were the hardest part of my own transition. That's why every DutyToResume package includes a LinkedIn Starter Kit written from your own duties.

Questions veterans ask

Do I really need LinkedIn after the military?

Many recruiters search LinkedIn to find candidates, and many employers check it after you apply. A complete profile lets them find you and see your experience in civilian terms.

Can veterans get LinkedIn Premium for free?

Yes, if eligible. LinkedIn provides complimentary Premium to members of the U.S. military community through partner nonprofits such as Hiring Our Heroes and Hire Heroes USA; you take part in one of their career programs. See LinkedIn's Help Center page linked below for current eligibility.

Should I use my rank or military job code in my headline?

Usually not. Civilian recruiters search for civilian job titles and skills. Put the job you want and your strongest skills in the headline, and mention your branch in your Experience section.

Will Open to Work tell my current command or employer?

You can choose 'Recruiters only', which shows your status to recruiters using LinkedIn's recruiting tools instead of putting a green frame on your photo. LinkedIn notes it can't guarantee full privacy, so check its Help page.

What should I not post?

Anything about operations, locations, movements, schedules, or anything classified or sensitive. When in doubt, leave it out.

Skip the blank page.

Your $19 package includes a LinkedIn Starter Kit written from your own duties: your headline, About section, experience entries and skills, ready to paste, plus your Career Match keywords, your resume in 7 styles, and your Career Match Report.
